The Ultimate Guide To Lip Filler Aftercare

Mar 6, 2023

Many people find lip fillers to be a great way to boost confidence and get the aesthetic they want. However, it’s important to be prepared for the aftercare that comes with any kind of cosmetic treatment — whether that’s Botox, a neck lift, or fillers. Knowing what to expect can ensure you get the best results.

Your cosmetic clinic should give you all the aftercare information, but it’s always handy to read up beforehand! Read on for our ultimate guide to lip filler aftercare.

Are there any side effects?

Certain side effects are perfectly normal after getting lip fillers. You may experience:
  • Slight swelling
  • Bruising
  • Itching or a rash
  • Tenderness
  • Slight bleeding at the injection site

These side effects may develop in the hours, days or weeks following your injections but should fade within a few days. If your symptoms persist or you’re experiencing severe pain, get in touch with your doctor.

How long will it take to see the final results?

After your lip filler treatment, it can take a bit of time for the filler to settle. You’ll usually see the final results in two or three weeks. If you’d like to get fillers for a particular event or occasion, it’s best to plan ahead so your lips have time to fully recover before the special day.

Can I wear make-up after my filler treatment?

While you can wear makeup such as foundation and mascara, it’s usually best to avoid using makeup on your lips until any bleeding has stopped. In most cases, this is on the same day. However, it’s safest to leave your lips makeup-free for 24 hours after getting fillers. You might then want to stick with a light lip gloss or chapstick.

Can I exercise after getting lip fillers?

It’s best to wait at least 24 hours after your treatment to carry out any strenuous exercise. Your lips may feel a little tender so you want to be gentle with your body for a few days. Walking, and other light exercises should be fine. Your fillers will likely last around six months.

Can I eat after getting fillers?

Yes! Don’t worry, you don’t have to fast after getting lip fillers. However, it’s important to stick to food that’s easy to chew and eat. You want to avoid touching or wiping your mouth as this can worsen swelling around the injection site.

What about drinking alcohol?

Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours after your treatment. It’s also best to avoid drinking anything through a straw, as this puts pressure on your lips. We also suggest you don’t drink alcohol for a few days before getting your lip fillers.

Can I go on holiday after my treatment?

We recommend that you don’t fly on a plane for a week following your lip filler injections. The change in air pressure may worsen swelling and bruising. Avoid staying out in the sun and travelling to places with very high temperatures.

Lip filler recovery tips

Read on for some advice on promoting excellent lip filler recovery.

How to reduce swelling

A small amount of swelling is normal after lip filler treatment. However, there are a few actions you can take to reduce swelling:
  • Hold an ice pack to your lips
  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water, eat lots of fruit and veg, and avoid excessive salt
  • Avoid very hot temperatures (e.g. steam rooms) for 24-48 hours after treatment

Minimising bruising

Applying aloe vera gel or arnica cream may help minimise any bruising around the injection site. Before doing so, always check with your medical professional first.

Skincare

As you might expect, your lips may feel delicate after getting fillers. After the injections, don’t exfoliate your skin or use any harsh products for at least 24 hours. Instead, choose a gentle cleanser and moisturiser. To avoid damage, don’t have a facial massage for the next two weeks.

Sleeping

If possible, try not to sleep face-down. Instead, sleep on your back and elevate your head with pillows to limit pressure on your lips and reduce swelling.
