Large Pores

One of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to skin care is “how can I get rid of my open pores”.

We all have pores. Some of us have larger pores than others. There are many reasons for this. It is not possible to close pores, but instead our focus is to reduce their size

Each pore contains a hair follicle, feeding into this, lubricating the follicle is a sebaceous gland which produces oil called sebum. The pores become clogged when excess sebum, dead skin cells and dirt become trapped, keeping the pore patent and wider.

Regular exfoliation is key with open pores removing dead skin cells keeping pores refined and clear. Unfortunately, there is no way to permanently close pores however we can shrink the pores with various treatments at home and in the clinic.

Home treatments consist of the ZO system of Getting Skin Ready. This consists of a good cleanser which will chemically break down the bonds holding dead cells together on the surface of skin (think lactic and glycolic acid), followed by an exfoliator which serves to mechanically break down the bonds and slough off dead cells. Lastly oil control. If we can reduce the amount of sebum we produce (salicylic acid is key) then we are reducing the amount held within the pore.
