Intimate Health

42% of women in the UK suffer from a form of urinary incontinence, with stress incontinence the leading type. Only 25% of these women visit their doctor for advice, many suffering alone. A leading cause of stress incontinence is vaginal laxity following childbirth and/or menopause.

This is due to the damage caused to collagen in the birth canal during delivery, which never fully regains its integrity and elasticity. Tightening and restoring the physiology in this area can stop those uncomfortable moments.

Childbirth and hormonal changes, due to menopause and ageing, may affect a woman’s intimate health. These physiological changes may alter the elasticity of the vaginal canal, damage the pelvic floor, and devitalise the mucosal tone of the vaginal wall.

Understanding the ageing process allows us to refine, improve and develop our features, delivering natural results, as well as identifying the changes in a woman’s life, body and sexual health, all of which can impact on her mood and self esteem.

Vaginal laxity is one of the most common, yet overlooked, health concerns among women. About 76% of females are likely to develop vaginal laxity at some point in their lifetime.

Kegel exercises and invasive surgery have previously been the only treatments available. ThermiVa helps to increase collagen production and cocentration in the vaginal tissue to help gain support and strength in the area, without the need for surgery, discomfort or downtime.

Stress incontinence and vaginal laxity, as a result of the above, can undermine a woman’s body image and self-esteem. Sadly, a woman’s intimate health after childbirth and post-menopause remains a largely taboo subject.

We feel that these issues impact women daily and should no longer stay taboo.

Childbirth and the natural ageing process cause changes which may affect feminine health. A particularly strenuous vaginal childbirth or multiple births can cause stretching of the vagina. The effects of menopause can also cause physical and functional changes, such as excessive dryness. In an international survey of 563 gynaecologists, 84% of responders believe vaginal laxity is underreported by their patients, and 95% felt that vaginal laxity impacts their patients’ sexual functioning.

¹Vaginal laxity can lead to the development of conditions, like stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and diminished sexual satisfaction (orgasmic dysfunction).

At the Medical Cosmetic Centre, we offer ThermiVA®, a radio-frequency (RF) based treatment to stimulate collagen, improving vaginal laxity. The treatment requires no anaesthetic, with little to no discomfort and no downtime.

ThermiVa uses controlled, therapeutic, radio frequency energy to gently contract and tighten the labia and vaginal canal. It also stimulates collagen production and may help in tissue and nerve healing.

There is no downtime after the treatment. Women can immediately return to their normal activities and resume sexual activity, even on the same day. There is no discharge or odour after the treatment.

Some results are immediate and they continue to improve with each treatment. Maximum benefit is around 6 months.

ThermiVa is very safe with few side effects. No burns, blisters, infections, organ or nerve damage have been reported. It’s also a safe alternative to more invasive surgical procedures.

ThermiVa uses a single use, disposable hand piece, ensuring no risk of transmission of infections.

The treatment creates a warm sensation with no pain during or after the treatment.

The ThermiVa protocol is a three-treatment series, each treatment about one month apart. However, some patients are satisfied even after one or two treatments.

ThermiVa uses RF, or radiofrequency, whereas other machines use a CO2 laser. Both cause rejuvenation effects to the vaginal area. The difference is that ThermiVa can also be used on the labia and clitoral area, and is not painful.

There is no stinging or discharge and it is non-ablative.

The treatment is easy with no pain or downtime and is very affordable.

ThermiVa can safely be performed six weeks after childbirth and in between pregnancies.

The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and requires no downtime. The typical protocol for ThermiVa treatments is three treatments, spaced four weeks apart. Many women see improvement in vaginal tightening after the first treatment, but  optimal results will be observed three months after the third treatment.
