Other medical uses for botox apart from reducing wrinkles

Oct 1, 2019

Botulinum toxin A, of which BOTOX(R) is a brand name, produced by a company called Allergan, is widely used in the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines. But, what many people do not know is that it is used in the treatment of many other medical conditions. Below we explore five other medical uses for botox apart from reducing wrinkles.

Eye disorders

It is widely known that BOTOX(R) can help to treat a number of eye disorders. It is useful in the treatment of strabismus, which is when the eyes are crossed over, and for blepharospasm, when the eye goes into spasm and cannot stop blinking. It works by gently relaxing the muscles in the eye.

Overactive bladder

An overactive bladder can be very distressing and embarrassing. When typical medications are unsuccessful, or not recommended, then another option is to have botulinum toxin injections. This can help to alleviate incontinence due to a leaking bladder and the feeling of having to urinate frequently, day and night.

Chronic migraines

Very few people know that BOTOX(R) can be used in the treatment of chronic migraines. Not only are migraines painful, but they can also cause light sensitivity, nausea and pain in the muscles of the scalp, forehead and neck. The good news is that BOTOX(R) can be injected to relieve any muscle tightness and resulting pain.

Excessive sweating

Excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis) is embarrassing for both men and women. When you have exhausted all other options, such as wearing breathable clothing, applying different deodorants and lifestyle changes, but nothing seems to work, then BOTOX(R) injections may help you. It is injected into the armpit and stops the chemical trigger that produces sweat.

Bell’s palsy

Finally, those who have suffered Bell’s Palsy may benefit from BOTOX(R) injections. Bell’s Palsy is when one half or part of the face experiences paralysis. There are many different reasons why someone may suffer from Bell’s palsy. In most cases, this is a temporary condition, but the injections can help to relax certain muscles on the side of the face that is affected, thereby allowing lifting muscles to work better.

If you feel that BOTOX(R) injections could help you with any of the above, see your GP or get in touch with us here at our Edinburgh cosmetic clinic for a consultation for some of the above. We are here to help.
